Lake Vermilion

Lake Vermilion is a forty thousand acre body of water with literally endless fishing opportunities. The countless submerged rock piles, islands, points, sandbars, open water basins, and weed beds offer myriad fishing opportunities for multiple species which include walleyes, northern pike, small mouth bass, large mouth bass, bluegills, crappies, perch, and of course the mighty muskie. From the opening of walleye season in May through ice up in November or December the fishing can be fantastic! The lake also offers numerous ice fishing opportunities.
The lake has a good population of muskies with some true trophy specimens. The forage base is large and diverse with a good population of white fish, tulibees, and suckers. The presence of this high protein, high fat, oily, forage fish contributes to some truly awesome trophy specimens. The sheer girth and mass of Vermilion muskies is impressive. This lake has the potential to produce a state record anytime. The DNR started an intensive stocking program of Leech Lake strain muskies in 1987. The muskies have been naturally reproducing for years now also.
The lake has an excellent population of northern pike with trophy specimens caught regularly. The walleye population is also excellent with great fishing opportunities spring, summer and fall as well as ice fishing. The lake is a renowned small mouth bass lake. The presence of rusty crayfish is contributing to a large population of jumbo perch in the east basins. The lake also has a good population of large bluegills and crappies.
Lake Vermilion also known as the lake of the sunset glow is a truly picturesque body of water. From sandy beaches to pine covered ridges to Canadian shield rock cliffs to red and yellow aspens and maples in fall, you won't find a more beautiful lake.
